Njideka Akunyili Crosby. Get to know the name, because if you have one of her works hanging on your wall, chances are it’s worth a pretty penny. Born in Nigeria, the Los Angeles-based artist moved to the U.S. when she was a teenager with the intention of studying medicine, but after taking an art class on a whim, she found her true calling. And in the past few years, she has taken the art world by storm. Her first solo exhibition came in 2015, and by 2018, her work was selling north of $3 million.
Her style is unique: typically collages that blend painting, drawing, photography and print-making. She uses imagery from her Nigerian roots (including herself) to touch upon themes of memory, family and the sense of otherness she felt as an immigrant in America. Watch her process in this fascinating and inspiring video.
